History of Eucalyptus in San Diego
Eucalyptus are large evergreen trees from the Myrtle (Myrtaceae) family. They arrived in San Diego from Australia in the mid 1800’s and were planted extensively throughout California during the Gold Rush in response to a perceived shortage of hardwood. Eventually it was determined that the tree was not a reliable source of wood for construction but it became popular for providing windbreaks and adding beauty around local farms, orchards and roadways.
There are over 700 species of eucalyptus trees in the world and they all contain essential oils! These elegant trees are both beautiful and aromatic making them a favorite choice for use in floral arrangements. At Suncoast Botanicals we grow some of the more popular species for the fresh and preserved markets.
The eucalyptus genus evolved on the supercontinent Gondwana 109 million years ago. The oldest Eucalyptus fossils found in Patagonia are 51.9 million years old.
